SEOUL, May 9, 2025 South Korean television personality Lee Sang-yong, affectionately known to the public as “Popeye,” passed away on Friday at 81. He collapsed near his home in Seocho-gu, Seoul, shortly after returning from a hospital visit and was later pronounced dead at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital due to cardiac arrest.
Lee was widely recognized for hosting the military entertainment show “Stage of Friendship” (우정의 무대) on MBC during the 1990s. With his iconic catchphrase, “Back to hometown—depart now!” (고향 앞으로 출발!), he brought comfort and connection to countless soldiers and their families.
