SEOUL, May 10, 2025 — South Korea’s ruling People Power Party (PPP) failed in its attempt to replace its presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo with former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, after a party-wide vote rejected the proposal.
PPP held an automated response survey (ARS) of all registered party members from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on May 10, asking for approval or rejection of the candidate replacement. The vote ended with more members opposing than supporting the change, effectively halting the party's push for a candidate switch.
Shin Dong-wook, the party’s chief spokesperson, stated after an emergency committee meeting, “We cannot disclose the exact numbers, but the proposal for candidate re-selection was narrowly defeated.”
With this outcome, Kim Moon-soo's candidacy has been reinstated. Reacting to the news, Kim announced the immediate launch of his election campaign, pledging to build a broad coalition to oppose Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung.
“I sincerely thank our party members and the people of Korea,” Kim said in a statement. “Everything is returning to its rightful place. We will unite with all those who share our vision and build a victorious foundation through innovation.”
Kim also expressed gratitude to fellow contenders, including Han Dong-hoon, Hong Joon-pyo, Ahn Cheol-soo, Na Kyung-won, Yang Hyang-ja, Yoo Jung-bok, and Lee Cheol-woo, and vowed to lead the election to victory with their support.
Addressing Han Duck-soo, Kim added, “I hope you will stay with the party and join us in this presidential campaign.”
Han’s camp responded in a written briefing shortly after the vote, stating, “Candidate Han humbly accepts the will of the party members and the people. He sincerely wishes for the success of Candidate Kim and the PPP in the upcoming presidential election.”
Han’s campaign also expressed gratitude for the public’s support, criticism, and interest, and noted that details on upcoming press events would be announced soon.

대한민국 여당인 국민의힘(People Power Party, PPP)은 김문수 후보를 한덕수 전 국무총리로 교체하려는 시도가 전 당원 투표에서 부결되면서 무산됐다.

이어 그는 함께 경선에 참여했던 한동훈, 홍준표, 안철수, 나경원, 양향자, 유정복, 이철우 후보에게도 감사 인사를 전하며, “이들과 함께 대선을 승리로 이끌겠다”고 강조했다.
한덕수 전 총리에게는 “당에 남아 이번 대선에서 함께해 달라”고 호소했다.
한덕수 캠프 측은 투표 직후 발표한 서면 입장문에서
“한 후보는 당원과 국민의 뜻을 겸허히 수용한다”며
“김문수 후보와 국민의힘이 이번 대선에서 승리하길 진심으로 바란다”고 밝혔다.
또한 “그동안 보내주신 응원, 비판, 관심 모두 감사드린다”며
“향후 기자회견 등 일정은 정해지는 대로 신속히 알리겠다”고 덧붙였다.
